South Florida for NEW YEARS
"You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart will always be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place…”
So this year for New Years I decided to head to sunny southern Florida to escape the dreaded cold the rest of the country (including CA) has been feeling and visit my two cousins that had recently moved into the area. I went for two weeks and hit up Orlando’s Universal Studios- Island Adventure, Miami’s South Beach,American Airlines Arena (To catch a warrior/ heat game- we won! so dope ! go DUBS! =)), and Fort Lauderdale. Below are pictures from the trip with more details
South Beach! Jan in Florida>>>>
Universal Studios- Island Adventure
We took a one day mini trip up to Orlando (about a three hour drive away from Fort Lauderdale ) and visited Universal Studios (Island Adventure Park). My absolute favorite parts of the Park were Dr. Seuss Land and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We did not get to ride the Hogwarts ride (good excuse to return=)), but we rode every other major ride in the park. The spiderman stimulation ride and hulk roller coaster are the best in my opinion ;)!
I Wish I could have gotten better pictures of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter but it was already dark and my camera sucked at capturing how cool the buildings actually looked =(
Heat Vs. Dubs
It was beyond amazing to catch this winning dubs game live! Esp. against one of the best teams in the league. Not gonna lie, American Airlines Arena is pretty tight. Couldn’t believe they had actual fire bursting out on their court! (we get it, miami, you guys are hot)
Where to Eat?!
I love food. You love food. Everyone loves food! Lets be real… Traveling is about sleeping in, relaxing and eating until you practically puke =) Here’s a list of food recommendations!
1) Brunch – hit up Rok:Brgr
Rok: Brgr is known primarily for its burgers but it boasts a delicious and hearty brunch menu. Make sure to order the Bacon Three ways ( Floridians love their bacon) that includes bacon…. cooked three different ways … (dunt dunt duntttttt) the jalapeno bacon is smackin! Also, the Elvis waffles, chicken and waffles and the Rok Rrgr Hash (cast iron skillet, chorizo, manchego cheese, two fried eggs) dishes are delicious!
2) For Lunch- Himmarshee Public House
We came here originally because my cousin works as a server. We ended up ordering the Fish Tacos, Fig and Prosciutto flatbread and the signature burger (with egg and bacon). The flatbread was my favorite! Absolutely delicious! In addition, the burger was probably the best burger I had on my entire two week stay- pretty good! I’d recommend it as a spot to either watch a sports game or grab some quick food.
3) For Dinner – Thai Spice
This restaurant is absolutely delicious! We ordered the pad thai, cashew chicken, fried calamari, wonton soup and Basil beef. I enjoyed every dish! The pad thai and wonton soup were my favorites, though. They also offer a special soy sauce with jalapenos in it which added a nice, spicy touch to the food!
4) For Dinner- Blue Ginger
This was a sushi restaurant that had really great sushi and even better dessert =)! Hah We ordered the Crunch punch roll, the happiness roll and the Mango tango roll. Once again, all were super delicious. What was really aweesome though were the thai donuts! (and we got them for free by checking in on yelp ;))
5) For coffee- Nuevos Cubanos
Although, I haven’t tried the food here, the coffee is amazing! One can’t visit Florida without trying authentic cuban cuisine (including the coffee!) I tried both the colada and cortadito. The colada is more bitter and, in my opinion, a bit stronger while the cortadito is sweeter ( it is essentially a colada with a shot of milk in it). These tiny coffees are super strong so make sure to sip on them little by little lol one of our friends took the colada as a shot and was super hyper and loud hahah to the point where he was shaking (yikes!) Other than that, it's a must have ;) The guy who always works here is super sweet and helpful too and gave us advice on places to visit while in the area.
6) For dinner- Little Havana Restaurant
As stated above, authentic Cuban food is a must ! This restaurant was delicious! I ordered Yuca (my favorite), chicharron de Pollo (fried chicken), black beans and rice with plantains. It was so good! A definite recommendation for Cuban Cuisine located in North Miami.
Hope you enjoyed this post! More to come on all of my travels, both within the U.S. and abroad <3
